Southwark Fire Station

Client: Hadston

PTAL have been appointed as architect for the design of one of the most high profile new secondary education projects in London. As part of a mixed use masterplan including 170 new homes, PTAL are designing a new 6FE secondary school, sixth form centre and community leisure centre on the site of the Old Southwark Fire Station. The scheme will provide a total of 1,150 much needed pupil’s places in central London as well as a range of new facilities for the local community.

The Old Southwark Fire Station is of historic importance to London as the first headquarters for the London Fire Brigade and the site of the first ever purpose built fire station. On a complex urban site PTAL have delivered an exemplary school design which involves the conservation and conversion of the existing Grade II listed buildings along with a substantial new build element.

Key to the success of the project has been collaboration; we have engaged extensively with our client Hadston, Education Funding Agency who are part funding the scheme, education provider Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation Trust, the London Borough of Southwark, Greater London Authority, Historic England and the local community.

PTAL’s appointment on this educationally led mixed use scheme is testament to our leading position in this emerging sector. Our approach of putting educational proposals at the heart of mixed use design has been key to the success of the project and we look forward to welcoming pupils and the local community back to the Old Fire Station Site.

“...We are very pleased with the work that you have done on these and are content to approve them from the HAFT’s point of view.

I should also like to add my thanks for the careful and thoughtful way in which you have worked with us in developing the plans to this point. It is an extremely exciting project that will, I am sure, be a showcase exemplary school building for all of us.”
